Belonging

I’m in a classroom helping a student understand a paragraph in a science book. He reads it to himself and then we talk about it. He cannot understand the first several sentences because before he can get through the first line he is interrupted with some idea that pops into his mind. He begins again, and again another idea and image pops into his mind. These uninvited thoughts continue to impinge into his mind, and these distractions keep him from getting through the sentences in an uninterrupted time period; hence, he cannot follow the thought of one sentence and connect it together to the next and so forth. The idea the paragraph is carrying is not comprehensible to him. The student is not ADHD nor does he lack intelligence. This student also has a hard time going to sleep at night because his mind will not shut down and give him peace. And this was before there were cell phones and short snippets of information always bombarding today’s students.

Is there a way out of this dilemma? At what age does it gain so much traction?  And yes, it effects both males and females.
